General Notes​

1. Students who choose to participate in the Markham-Stouffville ORMTA branch auditions are competing for placements, scholarships, and an opportunity to be showcased in the branch's year-end awards recital held at the end of April.

2. A minimum of 5 entries in a unique instrument group is required to hire a specialized adjudicator.

Eligibility

1. Candidates must be students of members in good standing with the Markham-Stouffville ORMTA branch as of Sept. 1, 2026. Members in good standing are those who are up-to-date with all ORMTA-related membership dues. 

2. Auditions are open to student instrumentalists and vocalists from RCM Level 1 to Licentiate (LRCM). Repertoire is to be chosen from RCM syllabi as well as popular listings. 

3. Solos, duet and on samples are welcome

4. There are no limits to the number of candidates a MSORMTA teacher may submit for branch auditions.

Fees

1. Fees and time limits for each level are listed on the registration page here. 

2. Audition fees are nonrefundable.

3. Audition fees will paid online, and will complete the registration process.

Scores & Memorization

1. Candidates must submit a score of the music for the adjudicator. Internet purchased sheet music must be accompanied ith the receipt. IMSLP scores are permissible. All scores must adhere to Canadian copyright law as outlined here. Please check with your teacher if you are unsure!

2. All piano, strings, and vocal solo repertoire INCLUDING studies must be memorized. Auditions played with music will receive written feedback but no mark, and will not be eligible to perform in the scholarship recital. Accompanists may use their own music. For chamber music, memorization is optional.

Accompanists

1. It is the responsibility of vocalists and instrumentalists to provide and accompanist for accompanied repertoire for both the audition and recital.

Audition Day & Results

1. Teachers will be notified of their students' audition time one week before the date of the event.

2. Students - please plan to arrive 15 minutes early before your audition time.

3. Our time limit is strictly enforced - students will not be allowed to play past their given program length indicated on their registration form

4. Students will receive written adjudicated comments and marks from a nationally respected adjudicator. These grades and comments will be emailed to the student's teacher within a few days of the audition.

5. If chosen for the awards recital, students will be asked to perform the piece which received the highest mark on their audition at the showcase recital.

Awards Ceremony Recital

1. This is a formal recital and students should dress appropriately. No jeans, shorts, or sandals please!

2. Please refrain from fidgeting, talking, checking cell phones, and other disruptive behaviour while other students are playing. Don't do to others what you would not want them to do to you while you are on stage!

3. The branch, through the generous donations of faculty, fundraisers, and private donours, has a very generous pool of scholarship funds for students who have been selected by the adjudicators as award recipients. These scholarships will be presented at the conclusion of the awards recital.
